Phases of Venus

We never obtain a satisfactory view of the surface of Venus when she is at her least distance from us, for at such times she turns very little of her illummated side towards us, appearing as an exceedingly slender crescent. When she appears fully illuminated, she is more than six times as far away. Consequently our best views are obtained at the corresponding phases 2 and 3, when the planet is half illuminated or appears as a thick crescent. She is at her brightest between the phases 1 and 3, and then casts distinct shadows on a bright surface at night.
